Searching pro-tips and organisation updates

Sometimes when you’re looking for a dataset, you’ve got a pretty good idea whose data it is. Mining tenements? Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. Conservation data? Well that’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions of course.

But sometimes you don’t know exactly what the dataset is called, or you’re looking for anything that fits the topic. In these cases, keyword searches aren’t always the most effective way to find what you’re looking for.

Did you know you can filter the DataWA catalogue by organisation?

Organisation filters can be applied from the filtering sidebar in Datasets search, or by visiting the Organisations page and selecting an agency name.

You can then browse datasets published by that organisation, or search by keyword and add even more filters!

If you’re already an organisation-filtering pro, you might like to know that we’ve made an update.

After the departments of Planning, Aboriginal Affairs, Lands, and the State Heritage Office joined together to become the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, they’ve been working hard to wrangle their data. In the meantime, existing datasets have been sitting under their original organisations in the catalogue.

From today you’ll be able to find all of these datasets under Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage in the catalogue.

No changes have been made to dataset pages or web service URLs, so all your bookmarked datasets and saved API calls will still work. If you’d like to keep an eye out for any future updates that do affect web services though, you can subscribe to system notifications via the Status page.
